
I was reading this book and something really confused me. On page 162 when the white guy is talking about the powwow outfit, all the Indians could think about was how much they hated the white people for loving them. Yes, having someone say how much they love your culture and are collecting artifacts of your ancestors might be weird, but at least they are showing appreciation to your culture. I mean, they said that all that they expected was "Another white guy who showed up on the rez because he loved Indian people SOOOOOOOO much." Maybe that was true. Arnold said that people looked down on his race and he was made fun for being and Indian, but when someone shows appreciation, all the Indians hate it and are annoyed and bored. I don't know, but that feels somewhat contradictory in my mind!
I think the reason they don't like it is because they love the IDEA of it more than the reality of it. It's voyeuristic...Look that up--if I spelled it right :)
