First Grader Suspended

The Des Moines Register's headline today was "Des Moines school district suspends 1st-grade home-schooler." The whole article was that a little boy was suspended for a week for bringing an empty shotgun shell to his school. The fact that it was 'part of a weapon' was still considered dangerous. Even through it was empty, the school proceeded with the same rules as anyone would get for bringing any actual weapon to school.
I personally thought that this was stupid. This little boy was only 6 years old and the empty shell happened to fall out in the middle of p.e. He obviously had no intention of hurting anyone, nor could it hurt anyone. It was empty. I feel like the boy should have been fine and had not punishment. If there was a real threat, sure go through with the rules, but think logically before suspending a 6-year-old who's home-schooled most of the day.

  1. It seems like someone got way too caught up in the word of the rules instead of their intent. I'm not even sure an empty shell would be as useful a weapon as a textbook or a pencil. This is just ridiculous, and it's not surprising that the kid is homeschooled...
