Some people reading this book are offended by the language that Sherman Alexie uses. I feel like the way he writes is unique and very real. If people want to read a real book, then you might have to put up with some real things in life. He just puts things as they really are. He does make anything cutesy or try and cover anything. I find it almost refreshing that he isn't hiding anything. I like how he says exactly what he's thinking, and it comes off exactly like what a 14-year-old boy would say and do, so that's right on point!

After i finished reading the book and thought about patters, the most obvious one is death. His dad's best friend Eugene dies, his grandmother dies, and then his own sister dies. Losing that many people within that short of a time would be hard for anyone to deal with, but being a 14-year-old teenager makes that situation even harder. He mourned and was sad, but he found hope with his friends and especially Rowdy. Everyone has that one friend that no matter how many fights you get in with them, they will still be your best friend. Rowdy was this for Junior. I think that if he and Rowdy hadn't worked things out, the way he handled all these deaths would've been way different. Basically, that one friend can make a huge difference.

I was reading this book and something really confused me. On page 162 when the white guy is talking about the powwow outfit, all the Indians could think about was how much they hated the white people for loving them. Yes, having someone say how much they love your culture and are collecting artifacts of your ancestors might be weird, but at least they are showing appreciation to your culture. I mean, they said that all that they expected was "Another white guy who showed up on the rez because he loved Indian people SOOOOOOOO much." Maybe that was true. Arnold said that people looked down on his race and he was made fun for being and Indian, but when someone shows appreciation, all the Indians hate it and are annoyed and bored. I don't know, but that feels somewhat contradictory in my mind!

Okay so, I've read way ahead, but I'm just going to write about what I want, because I'm not sure where we left off! When Junior went back to the rez with his basketball team to play his old school, I felt like that showed how strong he really was. People were throwing things at his head, he got stitches, and then he still wanted to play. When he did play, he got knocked out. When he woke up, he was still pumped up and wished he could have played more. That's determination. Before he started playing the first time, he was sad, angry, and nervous, but with the help of his coach he channeled all those emotions into something potentially good. I feel like if more people knew how to channel all the things going on in their lives into something more positive rather than destructive, the world would be much better off. He kept a positive attitude which isn't the easiest thing to do and is something I think everyone could use a little more of.

House

Okay, so when I actually get time to watch TV, I'll try and watch House. I think that this show is hilarious. And, it isn't even a comedy! House is the most upfront person who says exactly what he thinks. He's the most sarcastic guy, and uses reverse psychology very well. I feel like he uses his British wit to his advantage. I almost feel like he shouldn't use his fake American accent. I mean, who doesn't like to hear a British voice from anybody? Either way, this show is one I try and watch regularly. There's always a crazy medical mystery, that of course he figures out. The side stories and drama also add to the excitement of this show.

First Grader Suspended

The Des Moines Register's headline today was "Des Moines school district suspends 1st-grade home-schooler." The whole article was that a little boy was suspended for a week for bringing an empty shotgun shell to his school. The fact that it was 'part of a weapon' was still considered dangerous. Even through it was empty, the school proceeded with the same rules as anyone would get for bringing any actual weapon to school.
I personally thought that this was stupid. This little boy was only 6 years old and the empty shell happened to fall out in the middle of p.e. He obviously had no intention of hurting anyone, nor could it hurt anyone. It was empty. I feel like the boy should have been fine and had not punishment. If there was a real threat, sure go through with the rules, but think logically before suspending a 6-year-old who's home-schooled most of the day.

Grammy Winners

I was reading on AOL about Grammy winners and how they didn't even want to win a Grammy. To me I thought that sounded stupid. There are so many people out there striving to win a Grammy because it really is such a huge honor. If the people didn't want to win a Grammy, I feel like they should say that before the actual award ceremony so people who want the Grammy have a chance to get one. That's just a personal opinion, but it sounds fairly logical to me.
